Privacy Question

My employer is purging Social Security numbers from many databases.

How vulnerable are Quicken files containing SSNs?

From a security point of view, the files are no more vulnerable than any other file type. Given enough time and resources any file that is available can be opened, read, and data extracted.

I think the better question to have answered is: Are the security policies and practices that are in place on the computer/network, where the Quicken files are kept, enough to prevent unauthorized access to the files in question? In most cases your data is only as secure as the weakest link in the security chain, which is usually found sitting behind the keyboard.

It depends on the environment. Are you talking about business or personal?

Get Truecrypt and put your Quicken files on a secure (encrypted) drive. As long as you dismount the encrypted drive when you're not using it, your Quicken files (and anything else on that drive) will be extremely secure.
