Q05 Setup for Daughter?

Must be another "senior" moment however I've been using online banking for all of my checks since at least 1994. I would not define that as "minuscule".

No senior moment at all really. You could have easily went back and looked up the proper terminology before posting. That's what I do!

Again, why not simply let her do it for herself. If she's old enough to have a kid then she's old enough to learn for herself how to manage her finances.

What would an online payment to a non 3rd party look like? :-)

There's an account number and a routing number. There are not a "bunch" of routing numbers.

Many credit card companies do not download finance charges. Utterly stupid! It's a transaction that occurred on my account didn't it?

Those financial institutions should be avoided like the plague!

I use a commercial bank because credit unions don't offer the service I require.

If what you say is true that she's that busy she should hire a personal financial assistant because otherwise she'll never get her finances (or anything else for that matter) in order. I see she's hired you. I hope the pay is good! :-)

They aren't always in the mood to compete. I can't get anywhere near a

4.75% 12 month CD at mine and they only pay 2% on my MM Account currently (for quite some time). I don't expect to need a loan or mortgage for years if ever again. Mine pays 0% on my checking account. Their VISA is good when using different currencies; their ATM card malfunctions more often than not when out of the country and we have to resort to one from a bank. I hardly ever bother with free traveler's checks anymore with ATMs being so ubiquitous. Mine has no plans to support Quicken, EVER in any form... and they actually charge now if you want overdraft protection (I declined). I suspect their non-FDIC insurance could be a huge problem if there were banking problems down the road hitting credit unions in large numbers -- it probably serves more for buying loyal customers' false sense of security. But stick with the ad nauseum if it makes you feel good ;)

My local bank has a great travel club and makes funds available the next day. They seem to be more involved in the communities they serve.

Andrew, My daughter and I certainly appreciate your kind understanding, helpfulness and consideration of her situation and my knowledge level.

I doubt that you're being sincere here. I have purposely held back WRT my consideration of your daughter's situation - and trust me you do not want to hear what I really think there.

Andrew (from Andrew):

If I might ask (perhaps this is curious) what 'service' don't they provide? I am just curious. (If too personal, I know you're not shy in telling me so!) One item I will say mine doesn't do is safe deposit boxes due to (so they say), lack of space.

Well for starters many don't provide online download directly into Quicken nor bill payment directly from Quicken. Lack of ATMs, lack of branches, for other reasons.

As you know I am not shy in telling you - what makes you think it would be too personal? I rarely hide behind a "well that's too personal" excuse"

Hi. This is the qmail-send program at yahoo.com. I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses. This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.

I only read the newsgroup once in a while. Here's my reaction.

Like you, I happily used Quicken for years without using any on-line update stuff. But I've tried it the last year or so and I like it. Most of my transactions are credit card - I use my card to pay for almost everything - so the auto downloads save me a lot of manual entry. I still keep the receipts and check the ones that don't look right, but basically banks don't make mistakes.

My primary bank, however, does not offer much Quicken functionality, so all my check writing transactions I tend to enter by hand.

I do not use any pay-service to do check less electronic payments for me. Most of my regular creditors offer automatic electronic transfer, so I let them go fetch their own money straight from my bank. Again, I have never had an electric company overcharge me, or received an electric bill I did not wish to pay promptly, so I get myself out of the loop entirely and authorize the utility to fetch the money . This greatly simplifies things for me.

I also have a family member who struggles to find the time to keep track of their own finances. I do have time, so I do a lot of it for them. It helps that most of their accounts name me as a co-owner, and that in any case I know the userIDs and PassWords to access the accounts.

You got a lot of attitude from at least one of the posters on the board

- ignore him.

Maybe your daughter will just let you be her bookkeeper? You have the time and the technical inclination, and she does not. It really isn't possible to automate all of this - some of the payments can be automated, but Quicken cannot run itself.

best, Doug
