Downloaded transactions don't appear for review and acceptance

Nov 10, 2008 5 Replies

Hi, Gang.

For the past couple of weeks, my Registers do not show transactions that have been downloaded, so I can't Accept them. The transactions are here; I can see them when I look at the account in Online | Online Center. But they don't appear at the bottom of the Register. The "Downloaded Transactions (0)" tab is there, along with "Bill and Income Reminders (0 Due)", but no transactions are shown, even when I click the tab. The "Update Transactions" button is there, and it works just fine. But, after Updating again, still no transactions appear at the bottom of the Register, even though they DO appear in Online Center. So I can't Accept them and reconcile them.

I have One Step Update set for a checking account (Compass Bank), a credit card account (USAA) and two stockbroker accounts (Merrill Lynch and Edward Jones). They all were working as expected until about 10/25/08, but not at all since then.

I've searched everywhere I can think of for the switch to turn this back on but can't find any clues. I've been using Quicken for nearly 20 years, but downloading transactions for only a year or so.

As it says in my SIG, I'm running Quicken 2009 Deluxe Release R2 in Vista Ultimate x64.

A fair number of users have reported this problem over the years; I think mostly for Q2006 and later, but my memory may be off on that part.

Trouble is there have also been many "solutions" and workarounds reported (mostly in the Quicken Forums); so many, I've forgotten them all.

The two latest suggestions that have been reported to work (to make the transactions visible in the "Accept cleared transactions into register" window) - that I can remember - are:

1.) Go to the Online Center, select the account, and click the Compare to Register button on the Transactions tab. 2.) Select the account in the Quicken "Side Bar", "To Do" tab.

Here's an Intuit kb article on the subject.

Hi, John.

Thanks for the good advice. Sadly, I had already tried most of that - and it didn't work.

This lists all the "missing" transactions, but the Compare to Register button just switches me to the Register, which still looks as before, showing 0 downloaded transactions and with no buttons that change anything.

Different route to the same result as #1.

Any web-based forum, including this one, seems SO clumsy compared to a newsgroup that I can barely stand to try to follow a thread there. :>( But I did look at this one and saw the reports from others with the same problem - and the same promising-but-usually-ineffective advice.

The first two suggestions - Pay Bills first, and Run as Administrator - did no good at all. So I Copied the account, then Validated the original. No change. Both the copy and the validated original behave exactly as before.

It appears the only solution may be uninstall and reinstall Quicken, so that's what I'll be doing in the next half-hour, I suppose.

I'll be back...

OK. I'm back! And it's FIXED! ;

Hmm, I thought reinstall was listed there at the time I posted the link. I only remember having your problem once (with Q2007), and I too had to reinstall to get rid of it (and I probably reinstalled to a totally new folder). After I sent my previous post in this thread, I thought about posting again and mentioning reinstall, but my mind told me it was in the kb article. If you hadn't already thought of it, I surely would have suggested it.

I have no good answer for the need to reinstall. I think that the reinstall may do some of those "other" things that sometimes help and that I usually forget. Perhaps such as rebuilding some "temporary" folders that Quicken uses. [A related "trick": Deleting temporary Internet files is another one of those answers that have helped some users but not others.]

Because there have been so many different answers that were reported as helping, and so many that have been reported as not helping (with a significant overlap between the two); I have become more reluctant to try to help with the problem.

Glad you got it working.

Hi, John.

When I reinstall Quicken, I usually don't bother to uninstall first, but I did this time. I really intended to just reinstall over the existing installation, but I forgot and used Vista's Programs and Features to uninstall.

Yes, those overlaps get awfully confusing! It gives the definite impression that Intuit doesn't really know how to fix it and just lashes out in all directions - like kids trying to break a piñata - hoping SOMETHING will connect. Someone even suggested editing the Quicken.ini file, but I couldn't see anything pertinent in that.

As for deleting Temporary Internet Files, I long ago set Internet Explorer's Tools | Internet Options | Advanced, under the Security heading, to Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed. (I also created E:\TempINet and put my TIF there. Since this gets emptied after every use, I can use the same space no matter when I switch from WinXP to Vista and back.) Yeah, I know disk space is cheap nowadays, but old habits die hard. ;^}
