Opinions on Best Recent Quicken

I am currently using 2006 deluxe, and everything is fine (on my 32 bit vista desktop and 64 bit vista laptop). I am about to build another machine using Vista 64 and am considering upgrading to a later version to tide me over until Windows 7. Some say that they are not too impressed with Q2009. What year (07-09) of Q deluxe do most consider worth having?

Thanks!

I have used Q2007P, Q2008P and Q2009D. I would recommend going to Q2008P or later as 2008 was the first release developed with VISTA in mind. I have updated to Q2009D (I upgrade every year) and I had, nor have, any problems with the 2008 and 2009 releases. The major changes (as always) seems to be GUI issues. So are okay, some I don't like, but in a nutshell it doesn't mean much to me.

The reason I downgraded from Premium to Deluxe with 2009 is that there are many functionality items that I was not using so I didn't want to pay for the additional features. My 2009D file works fine after the downgrade.

Hi Oilcan, Thanks for your response. Since posting, I have also checked out reviews from amazon and other sites. You are right when you say that there are mixed opinions. Given that I'm looking to install it on a Vista 64 machine I'm about to build, I wanted to make sure of compatibility (of which there are even more mixed results).

There do seem to be more negative reviews than positive for almost every version. Aside from Intuits poor release record (buggy), abysmal customer support and their seemingly complete lack of integrity when it comes to pushing services and squeezing every penny out of their customers (I've been with Quicken since the DOS days...), it seems as though some of the major operational issues might be due to upgrading rather than clean installing Quicken (or uninstalling the old and then going through the registry and removing every instance of Quicken before installing the new version). Also, installing as admin might be expedient as well.

So, given that there really is no viable competition in this arena, I've just bought 2008 Deluxe on ebay ($24...not a bad price!), and I'll hope that the clean install does well. If it does, I'll do the registry routine on my laptop before installing. Many seem to belive that 2008 is less 'rebellious' than 2009 :).

Thanks again for your response. Given that you seem to have had no issues, I'm curious as to what OS you are using and (if Vista), if you've any special advice you might dispense to those about to install a new version?

Thanks again, Juva

Juva,

I have been running Vista Ultimate (original install on a new machine) since May 2007. I installed Q2007P as a clean install running as system admin. I then created a simple data set in Quicken to see where it placed the files and then copied over my old folders/file structure to the new machine. I had already updated to Q2007P at that point on my old machine so the "upgrade" from a prior verson was already handled.

Since I upgraded to the Vista machine, I have updated to Q2008P and Q2009D without any problems.

I don't think you will have a problem with the application. Mr. R.C. White is the person in this group that has the most experience in your operating environment.

Good luck and HAVE FUN!

Juva,

There's another aspect to your purchase of Q 2008 on eBay that, possibly, you haven't considered.

During your installation your -- most likely -- ran the update utility ... and immediately updated to R8. THUS, you bypassed the first releases of 2008 as Intuit worked out various issues.

Coupled with the significantly better price on eBay, I'd say that you got a better product, at a better price, than those who bought 2008 on initial release from Intuit.

Hi, Juva.

As Oilcan mentioned, I've been running Vista x64 since it was still beta in August 2005, installing Vista Ultimate x64 on my new hardware (AMD 64 X2

5000+ CPU w/3 GB RAM) as soon as it went RTM in late 2006. I've installed Quicken dozens of times as I've used later beta builds and as new Quicken versions have arrived. Early on, there were some "teething" issues and some growing pains and the eternal learning curve. But I installed Quicken 2009 Deluxe on the new alpha (not-yet-beta) Windows 7 last week, and had to re-install it on Vista just a few minutes ago to correct a problem with downloaded transactions (see the other thread). As I've said here before, the Q2009 installation on Vista is the smoothest yet. ; Thanks for your response. Since posting, I have also checked out reviews

Hi, R.C.,

The only problem (for me) is that have been some versions which I did not care for at all. I am, however, quite happy to say that since I posted here, I have built my new machine with v64 and all my apps installed, including Quicken 2008 (my $24 ebay purchase!) and QB 2007 (I use this machine [and the one it replaced, now retired to server duty]for business). I ran setup as an admin. Everything went fine, and I find myself pleasantly surprised and quite happy with 2008 (Deluxe). My opinion is that it was a giant step up from 2006. I love it! The only 'glitch' was that it would crash when attempting to download transactions, but setting the shortcut to run as admin resolved the issue.

This is where I really take issue with Intuit. They have the best software available (IMO), but I hate that they assault me with the marketing. They shouldn't ethically inundate me with ads when I've paid for the software. That said, they seem to have softened a bit on that front. I followed your point about declining the offer to run Q and then started it from my shortcut, opened my file on my Data drive and off I went. It's not often that I am more impressed than irritated with Intuit (for their 'marketeering' practices), but I must say that this is one of those rare occasions.

As for Vista 64's Program Files (x86) issues, I'm a firm believer in partitions and have kept my OS on C:\, apps on another partition, data on another, and many other partitions for different files (i.e., Media, Storage, Video, Beta, etc., etc.)

At any rate, I appreciate the extensive response and guidance. FWIW, I couldn't be happier with Q2008. An excellent version...one of the best I've experienced.

Thanks, Juva

Thanks, Oilcan, for your opinion and experience. As I stated in my post to R.C., I have 2008 up and running on my new 64 bit install and love it. Sans having to set it to run as admin to get transaction DLs working (without crashing), there have been absolutely no issues, and I can wholeheartedly recommend 2008 for those who want to run V64 (or 32 for that matter).

Thanks again, Juva

I couldn't agree more with this. I haven't expereinced 2009 (but have read of many that are unhappy with it), but I already love 2008. It outshines

2006 (IMO) and I am quite happy with the upgrade.

Thanks, Juva
