Access Quicken files created from one computer by a different logical computer

I am running Quicken 2k5 Basic from Windows XP. I dual boot and use linux for everything except financial software. I have since installed vmware and have an XP virtual machine. Can I install quicken to the virtual machine and safely open the data files created under the first machine install so I don't have to hardware boot to windows so often? Is anyone else here already doing this? Are there any particular problems I need to watch for?

I've been doing this for a while with Quicken under CrossOver and under XP/Vmware. Just make sure you don't run both at the same time, which I can but if you dual boot you can't. (Quicken protects against this, but I would be careful anyway). Haven't had a problem yet.

Hi, Brian.

I've never tried Linux or a virtual machine. But I've dual-booted different Windows versions for years (since Win95/NT4), and now am quad-booting both

32-bit and x64 versions of WinXP and the beta versions of Windows Vista (formerly codenamed Longhorn). I booted into each of the 4 versions of Windows and installed Quicken (now 2006 Basic version), always into the same location (E:\QuickenW) and always using the same data fileset. Now, no matter which version of Windows is running, I can run Quicken and update the data or see reports.

(Slight caveat: Vista Builds 5112 and 5219 worked fine. Quicken fails to install in the newest Build 5231, giving Error 1603 just before completion; after that, I have to Repair the Q2006 installation in WinXP before I can use it there again. It takes only a few minutes, but it's a nuisance and a disappointment since it worked in earlier builds.)
