upgrade from non-working version

Provided that the problem is with the program and not with your file set, you'd be just fine to uninstall the Q2000 then clean-install Q2006 and use your saved files. Quicken should convert the files to a Q06 format. Please, report back to us your progress.

Your problem doesn't sound to me like a problem that will be solved by reinstalling; rather it sounds like a data problem. And if that's true, converting to a newer version probably has a better chance of making matters worse than of making them better. I would try Validating a Quicken "copy" of my data first ... if that doesn't help perhaps super-validating ... if that doesn't help then maybe reverting to a backup.

I once had a similar problem, where I couldn't get any new data entered into the program. Turned out that I was working with the file on a USB thumb drive which was full. Once I copied it to my hard drive, everything went back to normal.

Thanks a million, validating the backed up data file found an error, corrected it and now all is well. Now the big decision is wether or not to upgrade to 2006. they say if it an't broke, dont fix it, but the software is over 5 years old.... . If I do decide to upgrade, is it better to uninstall my previous version of quicken and simply restore my data files from backup or is it best to install the new version over the old version. ( I haven't bought the new version yet, so I can't read the instruction.(yet).

If you install Q2006, you will have no choice; Q2006 will not install if there is another version of Quicken present. It will ask you to let it uninstall the previous version or quit.
