Reconciliation ending/beginning numbers slipping

In trying to reconcile my current checking account statement I was have a devil of a time looking for the discrepancy. Finally noted that the beginning figure in Quicken was less than that on the statement. At the end of last months reconciliation, it tallied. Anyone have any idea what is going on? I manually add all entries. Not brave enough to download from the 'net. Thanks, Linda S

Is it possible you entered a transaction during the last month with the wrong date (i.e., it's now before the end of the last reconcile)? Try sorting (or searching) the transaction register for an amount equal to the difference you're seeing. If it's just one transaction, you should be able to find it that way. You could also search for uncleared transactions and see if it shows up there.

Good morning, The only transaction that matches the discrepancy was last entered in January 2005. Then it was part of a lump sum which would have really thrown things off. Even a date before the last reconcile would not do this. It would have shown as an uncleared check/item. Did a sort looking for the amount, no luck except as mentioned in the first paragraph. I usually do not print off a report but am going to look and see if they are stored anywhere in Quicken. This has happened before. Just never questioned it and tried to find the answer. Let me know if you think of anything else. Thanks, Linda

Of course, the discrepany could be the net of several transactions rather than just a single transaction.

Will check both this month and last. Still puzzled. Got it down to

162.50. Still hunting but taking the evening off. Linda

I'm grasping at straws, but is it possible you 1) accidently edited a previously reconciled transaction and changed the amount, 2) moved a reconciled transaction from another account to this one, or 3) manually changed the Cleared field of some transaction? Of course, I don't know how you'd track that down besides trying to compare the previous reconciled balances to your statements. Sorry.

I will check out your suggestions. We changed the "sweep" option in our account at the bank and I set up an investment account with a linked checking account. However, none of the amounts equal what is showing in those two accounts. May need to throw myself on the account managers desk at the bank for help. Thanks again for your suggestions. Linda S

PS Since posting in this group I have begun to receive masses of SPAM in my ATT account. Discouraging.

That's why most of us use some method of "munging" our return email addresses. That is, we use "throw away" email accounts (free ones that we only use for usenet or web forums, etc.). Or, we add some nonsense to our actual email address. I prefer to use a secondary account (not my main email address) and then add "nospam" to my address. That way the automated email address scavengers don't get a viable address when they scan newsgroup postings. ... And anyone who wants to email me directly can look at my address and figure out what to remove to send me an email.

Regards,

Margaret

Hi Margaret, Should have thought of that. Have read enough posts about munging. Just never came to mind. Was boggled enough with the Quicken program going TU on me and putting in the wrong beginning balance. Got so used to it being right that I never thought to check. My fault. Linda S
