Sharing files - License's

I am looking at getting Quickbooks Pro or Premier. This is my situation.... I will install it on my work PC but then also install it on my laptop. I will be keeping on my data on a 3rd party server. Do I need to purchase 2 license's to do this...?

Thanks Gordon

Hello Ed....

Thank you for your reply.

I basically run a "one" man business here.... and because of the nature of the business I can not be glued to my desk. This is why I need to access quickbook files while I am in the office... as well as when I am mobile.

Right now I am using an old Mac Ver of QB... 4.0 and it allows me to do this... but now I am converting over to PC - Windows machines... and will need to get Windows ver of QB.

By chance .... do you also know if its possible to convert QB for Mac files to QB for Windows...?

Thanks Ed...

Hello Ed...

Thank you for your reply.

Basically I run a "one" man business... and with that I can not be glued to my desk. This is why I need QB on both my Desktop and Laptop.

I have run into other programs that will not allow you to make multiple installs. I just want to be sure that this will not occur when I install QB.

I am currently using an Old Mac ver of QB... 4.0. It works fine on both teh desktop and laptop. I have not purchased a Windows - PC based machine along with Windows based laptop so this is why I need to get a new copy of QB for Windows.

Is it possible to transfer the Mac files to Windows platform... or am I looking at a nightmare...?

Thanks for your help again Ed.

Yes its possible but I don't think its possible from 4.0. QB for Mac 6.0 &

7.0 have the ability to Create a Windows Backup which can then be restored by the Windows version. The latter platform cannot just open files created by a Mac version as the extensions are different. You might be able to download a trial version of QB Mac 2005 just so you can update your current file and create a file for the Windows version.

BTW, I'd recommend getting the latest version possible to make that Windows copy and make sure you duplicate your original prior to upgrading it. QB's file conversion utility has been wonky and the cause of some serious problems. Data loss wasn't an issue but the ability to print checks and view certain reports was problematic after a conversion to Windows from the two versions prior to 2006. I haven't purchased the latest because the "changes" are basically useless junk and certainly not worth $199. I do hope they fixed the conversion utility though.

When you are using the data on your laptop, will you have an internet connection to the third party server? If so, you can install QB on the server, or on your desktop machine, and connect to either using Windows Remote Desktop, providing the server uses Terminal Services or Windows XP, and/or the desktop is a Windows XP machine or also has Terminal Services installed. This way, you won't even have to install a second copy on the laptop.

This works like a charm and I use it all the time.

In the context I was speaking, that of using Quickbooks' built-in Mac/Win file converter, its a QB problem.

He said he's using Mac 4.0 so VPC or another emulator isn't a factor.

They developed a built-in utility to convert an existing Mac company file into a Windows backup in 2004 which is version 6.0. It creates the backup but causes data file corruption either in the creation itself or in the restoration on the Windows side. Version 7.0, 2005, supposedly improved this feature but its still broken. These versions also have the ability to "restore" from Quickbooks for Windows. QB Mac will take a regular .qbw company file and convert it to a .qbmb which is the extension used for Mac company files.
