Installing Quickbooks 2002 on Windows Vista

I have just changed computers and have reinstalled Quickbooks 2002 on the new PC which runs Windows Vista. However, when starting the programme I receive the message that "Your user account for Windows was created with Restricted access to system resources. This will prevent Quickbooks from operating properly. Please contact your system adminstrator and ask him or her to grant you standard user rights."

Please note that as a single user I installed this as Adminstrator. I set up a new user with standard access rights and received the same message on looking to run the programe.

I would appreciate any pointers on how I can move forwards.

Many thanks

Martin

QB 2007 was the first version that could run on Windows Vista. Upgrade to QB

2008.

I don't know a thing about Vista but being first, I'll ask a question back...

Will QB run under the Administrator account?

No. It would not run under Adminstrator or standard user but it seems that only 2007 upwards will work on Vista.

Many thanks for your help. If I run an upgrade on the PC to upgrade from

2002 to the 2008 version will this work or will I need a brand new Quickbooks?

Have you also tried running it in XP compatibility mode?

If I read you correctly, you want to run the QB 2008 installer on your new Vista machine that has a broken install of QB 2002 and choose to upgrade that install. I wouldn't do that. First, completely uninstall QB 2002, then do a fresh install of QB 2008 and be sure to update it to the latest release. Lastly, open your old QB 2002 data file (after making backups of course) in QB 2008 and let it do it's conversion to the new version.

Note: be sure you haven't mucked with Vista's new security model, such as disabling UAC -- the Vista supported versions of QB don't like that.

Yea, have you tired? After all its not my data that could get corrupted its yours.

I don't see how running a program under XP compatibility could corrupt a QB data file. The whole purpose of that option is to be able to run older programs under Xista. I know numerous people that are running 2004 under this option without any problems.

Can you explain your statement?

You can upgrade to XP for less than the cost of upgrading QuickBooks.

When the Intuit clearly states that Versions 2007 and up are the only versions that are supported in Vista Haskel does not take any chances. It just does not pay not to upgrade QB to a version certified to work on that operating system. Even if you can get an older version running there will always be that doubt that any and all problems encountered are caused by running the program in Vista.

I sure as hell would never tell any of my clients that its OK to run QB 2004 under Vista. Could there be file corruption, perhaps I don't know for sure but then I will never know because Haskel practices safe computing and so should you.

A number one. After the file is converted and before you make a single entry, run a verify. Some data files [ones with large quantities and small per unit costs] can't be converted to newer versions because QB changed the way it rounds numbers in its inventory cost calculation. 99.99% of files have no problem, but you don't want to be in the .01%.

QB 2007 and up are only compatible with Vista, period.

Uninstall Quickbooks 2002 if its installed already. Disable UAC (use msconfig -> tools -> disable UAC -> restart pc). The open your CD in explorer. right click on the setup file and select run as administrator and do the installation. Once its completed, restart your PC and see if quickbooks works properly. You might have minor issues with things like quickbooks browsers and the likes but it will most certainly work for most other functions. Re-enable your UAC using msconfig again and see if QB continues to work. You are done...

All the best.

I have a problem with performing backups though... QB just says you data was not backed up. I wonder if anyone has an idea to resolve this in QB2002.

For crying out load. The OP is on QB 2002. Just upgrade to a version that is certified to work on Vista. If not then downgrade to XP and still upgrade QB to 2008.
