Quicken 2005 on Windows Vista

I realize Intuit has not certified Quicken on Vista yet (any version), but I thought I'd try this group.

I installed Quicken 2005 on the just released Vista. I copied over my data files. I can open my QDF file and enter transactions but when I exit I receive the "Quicken has encountered a problem and needs to close" dialog. I installed Q using the same user that is trying to run it (and it is the Admin user).

I tried the following but nothing resolved it.

  1. Tried giving full control access rights to Everyone for the data files.
  2. Set qw.exe to run in Windows XP SP2 compatibility mode.
  3. Set qw.exe to run as Administrator.

Interestingly, I can create a new QDF file and it opens and closes without issue.

Nothing worked. Any ideas?

Cheers, Pat

Hi, Pat.

There should be no compatibility problems between Q2005 and Vista. Which versions of Quicken (Basic? Deluxe?) and Vista (Home? Ultimate?) are you running?

I'm a one-man one-computer kind of guy with no net but the Internet, so in all my years of running Windows and Quicken, I haven't had to learn much about permissions and such. Vista is much more security-conscious than earlier Windows, so I've had to get familiar with a few of those features. I've used only the Ultimate version of Vista, but I understand that the Home versions have different security restrictions.

Just to clear up one possible stumbling block: when you copied your data files, you DID get the whole fileset, didn't you? Not just the .qdf file, but also any related files such as .qel, .qtx, etc. Quicken won't work without the full set, which varies depending on how YOU use Quicken.

I've clean-installed Quicken over 20 times in the past year, as new versions (Q2005, Q2006, Q2007) and new beta builds of Vista arrived. As a long-time dual-booter, I always install Quicken into its own folder (not in "Program Files") on a "neutral" volume. That is, WinXP may be on D: and Vista on V:, but I always install Quicken into E:\QuickenW, and I let Quicken put my data fileset into that same folder. Then I install each new Quicken into that same folder, over the top of the prior installation. But I "bail out" of Quicken Setup before it completes. I don't let it get Quicken Updates and I don't let it Launch Quicken when it finishes. Instead, I exit Setup, then use Windows Explorer to browse to my .qdf file (NOT qw.exe) in E:\QuickenW and click on it. This starts the new Quicken with my old data file loaded. I still have to Register (again!) and set a couple of preferences (again), and then I'm ready to go. As I recall, Vista did ask me the first time if I wanted to let Quicken run, but I said Yes and it doesn't ask that anymore.

For me, Quicken 2007 Basic is running very well on Vista Ultimate x64. ;I realize Intuit has not certified Quicken on Vista yet (any version),

RC,

Thanks for the comments. I am running Quicken 2005 Delux and Vista Ultimate x86. I copied the entire data directory so I think I have all the files.

The reason I think it is file access related is that when it throws up the error dialog I can view the crash.xml from the error dialog and it contains (among a great deal more data),

-

- UnhandledException C:\Program Files\Quicken\qw.exe

- 0xc0000005

EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION

0x00000000

- 6000 6 0 2 7.0.6000.16386 ... etc

That is why I thought it was file access related.

Cheers, Pat

Instead of just coping the files have you tried to export them from the old system and then import them in to the new system? Just a thought.

You might give the Vista guys a chance at this too.
