QB Simple Start able to use QB Premier data files?

Good evening from Wisconsin,

I have a client who currently uses QuickBooks Premier 2008 on one PC and would like to now use it from four different PCs. The employees on those PCs have different working hours so the QuickBooks data files will only be open from one PC at a time.

I have moved the data files from the original PC and installed the network server portion of QuickBooks Premier 2008 to a server running Windows Server 2003. The client version of QuickBooks Premier 2008 has been left on the original PC, and accessibility to the data files on the server have been verified.

The client found a great deal at a local retailer for three copies of QuickBooks Simple Start 2008 at $9.99ea (a typo in their inventory database perhaps) and had me install it on the other three PCs. When I go to access the QuickBooks company file, I receive an error indicating invalid permissions but as I have verified accessibility with the existing QuickBooks Premier copy, my suspicion is that data files created with Premier are not compatible with Simple Start.

However, I cannot find any documentation that would indicate such an incompatibility. Can I please be pointed to such a reference, if it exists?

Thank you in advance,

Wow your client got ripped off. That is a lot of money for Simple Start, I thought that piece of garbage was free. Any who, there may be a possible rights issue to the folder where the data file is located.

I believe all versions can access files created in other versions with the exception of Enterprise. You can certainly test that assumption out by copying the data file to a local folder on one of the three new workstations and see if it opens locally.

Its also possible that Simple may not be able to work with a file that is being hosted by another computer, its an environment that I would never even bother to try out, Simple is that bad.

I agree especially since SS is now free from Intuit. At least Pro Advisors can get them for free.

The underlying structure of SS through Premier are all the same. I have been able to open my company file created by Premier accountant version and Toggle down to SS. Features that are not available in SS don't exist but will reappear when you toggle back to Premier.

This might be the issue. As the name implies SS is the lowest level program. I doubt it supports networking.

I would try using something like LogMeIn Free or GoToMyPC instead of accessing the file through the network to see if that works for the remote employees. Have your users log into the computer that uses Premier to access the file. There are so many features missing SS that your employees will get frustrated very quickly especially if they have used Premier.

Also since only one user will be accessing the file at one time there is no need to have the file hosted.

The file can physically be located on the server but there is no need for a database engine running on the server.

Good evening from Wisconsin,

Thank you all for the insight and experience. My client has decided to purchase additional copies of QuickBooks Premier 2007 for the additional users. Also, he wasn't happy when I told him he could download Simple Start from the web and showed him how to do it.

Thank you again,

Choosing year 2007 version was a mistake he should have opted for a 2008 installation but 1,000 times better than any year of Simple.
