Q 2008 won't remember data location on new install

FYI I found the same problem on the Quicken forums website regarding 2009 (no solution posted)

"Every time I open Quicken, I am forced to have to "Select Your Data File". How do I skip this option and just go to my data file? This is beyond annoying. "

Have you tried to add the data file name to the Q icon used to start Q?

If not, make a copy of the current Q icon and add the file name to the properties something like: "C:\Program Files\QUICKENW\qw.exe" FileName

1. Use "..." if there is a space in the FileName
2. FileName is the name of the Q file SET without its extensions.
3. This works for XP but I am not sure about Vista.

sounds like rights issue... I think Q can't make the changes to it "recently file open" part.

make sure you login as admin and / or have full rights to Q folder.

by the way, when you uninstall did you also remove (or rename) Q. folder? you might want to try that.

but this realy sounds like a right issue to me.

According to Q there is no type of rights issue. Q was uninstalled using a special "deep uninstall" from Q's tech support rather than the normal uninstall. As part of Q's tech support they even had me create a new "virgin" administrative user account to install from.

This is perplexing!

Wouldn't I need the full path to the data file?

Not on my XP Home SP3 but I do not know about Vista.

Remember this is not a true complete file spec but only the file set name.

I think if your shortcut used the full path in the "Properties > Start in:" field, you wouldn't need the full path in the "Target" field.

What if the start in place is on another computer on the network? I'm not sure how to tell it a path. Too bad the "Start In" doesn't have a browse button.

Bob, what you need to do is map a network drive. The directory on the network can be mapped to the Q: drive, and set to reconnect when the system boots. Then, Quicken will know that your data is in "Q:\". Once you do this, then Quicken will remember the path to the data, and you will not have to specify anything special.

"Windows Explorer->tools->Map Network Drive" Then fill in the drive letter, and choose the path to map. Select "reconnect at login", and then point Quicken to Q\:Qdata.QDF.

There is an accepted way to do that ... but I don't think Quicken likes it.

Do you have the networked folder mapped to a drive?

Ahhh, what I just suggested, as I had not read your post at the time.

I really don't know about the mapping, I'm not that well versed. Now that I think of that it's probably putting the cart before the horse anyway since I haven't seen able to get Q to run no matter where the data is. I think I'll try it with the "run in" on the local drive first and see what happens.
