Install problem

I am installing Q 2008 on a new computer and am having a problem. It seems to install fine. As part of the setup one of the screens asks if you want to open an existing Q file (which I do), Start a new one, or restore from a backup. It will do any of those options fine but... next time you start Q it forgets where it was and goes back to that same setup screen asking how you want to set it up.

How can I get Q to remember the file it's working with?

Does this make any difference? I misplaced my original CD & Q support downloaded the program install file to my desktop and I installed from there.

Thanks in advance... Bob

Hi, Bob.

I always abort the Setup at that last step and close it. Then I use Windows Explorer to browse to my QDF file and click (or double-click) on it. It starts my new Quicken with my old data file loaded. When finished, I Exit normally (usually with the X in the red corner). Next time I start Quicken from its icon on the desktop, it opens the MRU (Most Recently Used) file - which is exactly the one I want. ; I am installing Q 2008 on a new computer and am having a problem. That actually made it worse. Doing it that way Quicken booted to the screen saying welcome to Quicken 2008 are you a new or previous user of Quicken, I say previous and the next screen is the one about which file to use. After closing when I reopen Q it goes to that previous "am I new" screen and then to the file selection screen!

Hi, Bob.

Maybe I used too much shorthand when I said I "abort" setup. :^{

I've installed Quicken (2005 through 2009) well over a dozen times in the past 3 years as I've beta tested both x86 and x64 versions Vista and now Win7. This method has always worked for me.

When I get to the final Quicken setup screen, I remove the check from the box that says to "Start Quicken". Then I click Done and Setup closes. At this point, Quicken is fully installed, but not running. Then I DO NOT START QUICKEN FROM ITS ICON. But I use Windows Explorer to navigate to the folder where my RC.QDF file resides. (In my case, this is E:\QuickenW\rc.qdf. The default location is C:\Program Files\Quicken\QDATA.QDF.) I click on the QDF file, NOT on the QW.EXE file. As I said, this starts Quicken my QDF file loaded. ; Doing it that way Quicken booted to the screen saying welcome to Quicken

Something is not exactly the same way. I never see that "new user?" screen.

If this doesn't work for you, Bob, please tell us, in as much step-by-step detail as I've given above, exactly HOW you install Quicken. And then HOW you start it for the first time after installation.

I did as you said and it did not work. Here is the actual scenario: First I uninstalled my Quicken so I could do a reinstall to stop at your point I did not start Q once installed per your directions I double-clicked the data file Q opened BUT it opened to the SAME "install" screen as before asking if I wanted to use an existing file, etc. I knew it was not what we wanted but I figured I may as well keep going at that point - nothing to lose. I directed Q to the data file and it brought it up as normal I pulled down the file menu and confirmed that it was the only file listed and closed Q On restart it went to that same welcome screen

Note: Keep one thing in mind. This is NOT a proplem using the existing file. On the start screen that I am getting if I choose the most basic "start a new Q file" it still gets that same setup screen on my next boot up. This is driving me nuts.

FYI: Is it possible there is some kind of protection on the install file? I did successfully install it on my older computer that we are no longer using before attempting to install on this new one. (Please see my other post).

Hi, Bob.

I'm sorry you're still having problems. Perhaps it 's time to try Jerry Witalka's suggestion to use the QCleanUI utility. It does not touch the data files, but cleans out some (all, we hope) of the debris that the Quicken install process scatters on our hard drive and in our Registry.

You STILL haven't told us the actual location of Quicken on your computer. Is it in C:\Program Files (x86)\Quicken? (Vista x64 puts it into the (x86) version of Program Files because Quicken is a 32-bit program installed on a

64-bit OS.) And we still don't know the name of your data file or its location; is it in the same folder as the Quicken program files, or in a separate folder or even on a separate hard drive? In my case, both the QDF file and QW.EXE are in the same E:\QuickenW folder. Having them in separate folders SHOULD let them still work as I described, but maybe there is something different in your computer organization that won't let that happen. I know you've already told us a lot about your computer, but there are a few critical points that we don't yet know about.

How many User accounts are >>>>> I am installing Q 2008 on a new computer and am having a problem. ...

HOW are you getting that existing data file into your new computer? And where are you putting it? And are you making sure to get the full SET of related files? As you probably know, you need more than just the QDF file. You also need the few related files with the same name but different extensions. I have RC.QEL, RC.NPC, RC.IDX, RC.QPH and RC.QTX, in addition to RC.QDF. I need ALL those files, which makes up what Quicken calls "a file", but we often refer to as a "fileset" to emphasize that I'm talking about all of them. If we use Quicken's File | File Operations | Copy, it will automatically handle the full fileset, but if we use Windows or DOS tools (Copy, Move, etc.) to move them, we must remember to include all of them.

My procedure works for me. It SHOULD work for you, too. Maybe someone else can spot some detail that we are missing.

Maybe I missed it, but I think it might help if the op told us what operating system he's using.

And the exact data file name, the full path to it, and the location of qw.exe - all of which you asked for, were my other questions.

"Hasty", more so than "abrupt".

The suggestion (to use qcleanui.exe) has nothing to do with your data; it's an aid to insuring that uninstalls of Quicken get rid of previous installs.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I don't think that was the problem but I'll try it 1st thing in the morning.

Hi, John.

Thanks for the reminder. I THOUGHT Bob had said "Vista x64" in a prior message, but I must have confused it with some other thread. No, now I recall: I checked the headers on his message and saw that he was using Windows Mail - which means he was using Vista - but I don't know why I thought it was x64.

Yes, "which OS?" should be one of the first questions! Bob has posted 6 messages - so far - in this thread without telling us that.

R.C.,

Still no luck. I even used QClean this time & reinstalled (not using the start Q option from the install program). It opens fine by clicking the file. That is the only one listed under the file menu. When I open Q 2008 (Vista) conventionally it takes me to that set-up screen asking if I want to use an existing file, use a backup, or creat a new file. Help please. How can we get this to run normally?

Hi, Bob.

Thanks for confirming that you are using Vista, although you STILL didn't say if it is x64 or x86, or if it is Home Basic or Ultimate. It probably doesn't matter, but it takes only a few more keystrokes to remove any uncertainty. A single line like the last one in my Sig can tell us a LOT.

And you STILL haven't told us WHERE your QDF file - and related files - are stored. Since we can't look over you shoulder, there's no way for us to guess if the problem may be in Quicken's inability to actually locate your data file and then remember its location. The complete pathname to your qw.exe AND to your data file might (or might not) give us some clues. For all we know, your data may be on a thumb drive.

We're trying hard to help you, but we need for you to answer our questions, not just tell us what you've tried. You've told us THAT over and over, but you haven't told us WHERE your files are. And you haven't told us HOW you migrated your DATA files to your NEW computer.

This thread is getting so long that it's hard to follow and to remember what has already been said. It may be best to start a new thread. In the FIRST post in that thread, be sure to tell us exactly which Quicken program and exactly which Windows version are involved. And it wouldn't hurt at all if you tell us how many hard drives and how they are partitioned. Might not matter, but we won't know until we know. :^}

I started the new thread as requested. Q support sent me an email saying to uninstall using QCleanUI (which I did), but to make a new Vista administrator's acct before re-installing. It doesn't say but I assume I'm supposed to log on as the new administrator before installing. Does that make any sense to you?

Thanks... Bob
