Quicken 2006 and Windows xp install problem

I continuesly get error 1638 with installation of original CD Quicken 2006 Deluxe,. I uninstalled and deleted all information of an earlier version 2000, but still get error 1638 when I want to install Quciken 2006.

I went to the Quicken site and downloaded 2 files and ran them. Still same error. Then the site directed me to the MS site and downloaded 1 file there and ran it. Still the same error.

The earlier 2000 version was in a different folder and all has been deleted, yet I cannot install 2006.

When I do a SEARCH for Quicken it finds nothing, yet always the install error 1638.

Unbelievable poor software!

How can I proceed?

Thanks. I went there before, downloaded the file, signed on as Administrator and excuted the file.

Still no luck. Still get erro 1638 and in Safe Mode 1601.

Also downloaded 2 files from MS, executed them, still the same error message. Unbelievable stupid SW not to allow you a brand new version automatically.

Have spent 2 days so far without success.

Did you try following the instructions posted on the Quicken FAQ site?

Here's a link for convenience.

There's always been something strange about the way the Intuit kb site handles links to it. It's like you can't get there from here.

The only reliable way I've found to post links to kb articles is to use the following url with the correct kb article number substituted for the 4 digit number you see at the end (watch the wrap).

You can also just post the kb article number itself. If a user goes to the support site and keys the 4 digit article number into the search box and clicks Search, a link to that article will be returned.

I should have added that the kb article number is found to the right of the article itself, and Intuit calls it "Answer ID".

YES I have gone to the official site many times.

I am not computer illiterate either, having worked at IBM for 27 years and having helped many others with computer problems.

I have followed their instructions exactly.

I have downloaded their recommended files to make a clean install. I have downloaded the file from Microsoft. I have executed these files carefully.

I have gone to SEARCH and looked for Quicken and Intuit. Nothing there.

I have created a new User account and tried to install there. Still error

1638.

Quicken has the absolutely worst >> Did you try following the instructions posted on the

Reinstall from an administrator account?

I may be wrong, but I think Q2007 may have been the first version that the geniuses (genii?) of Intuit made so it was really possible to install from a limited account.

Do you think I could install a 2007 version without all these problems? I have not opened it yet because I had the 2006 CD and had it installed on the same computer before. I just needed to format everything, started to slowly install applications etc etc.

BUT - if you believe that 2007 WILL install in a new user account, I shall try that.

BUT - the Quicken technical support (not too good either) said 2007 would encounter the same problems. I could do another TOTAL reformat and then it should install fine. Wonderful advice, right?

What if we had to do that with every application, we would after years still be at the first application.

But I am awaiting you and other replies anxiously. Thanks for all who try to help.

The above is what I just said: "I may be wrong". Don't /know/ the truth . I run Q2006 Premier (although I feel deluxe may have been enough). I still use XP, probably will until there is a real need for Vista. I didn't see the use of upgrading to 2007 this year, and will wait for the reviews of 2008 before buying that. I expect the first public mention of

2008's virtues and drawbacks in August or September.

Q2006 should install in an administrator account. You might have to switch back and forth.

From your previous posts, so far what you've done to cure the problem is to execute 2 files from Q and 2 files from MS. Is that correct? Is that everything you've done so far? It would be very helpful if you provided the NAMES of these 4 files, so they are not recommended again.

Does that COBOL/MVS experience come in handy? :-)

The files are MSFIX, and msicuu2. I forgot the files that I also used that Quicken had on its download.

NO, that is not what I have done so far.

I have tried to install into C:\Quicken, I have tried to install onto another drive K:\Program Files\Quicken, I have tried to install onto a separate external drive in its own directory.

I have used CCleaner to clean Registry.

I have gone to Add\delete and found no Quicken or Intuit there.

I have done repeated Searches and again find nothing there.

I have finally gone into Regedit and deleted anything it found anywhere having to do with Intuit or Quicken.

Sheesh I feel your pain. I suspect there is some other software getting in the way of the Quicken install. For example, just yesterday I tried for the third time in two weeks to install Thunderbird V 2.0 (I was using V1.5) and the install would hang because it could not open a file in a very obscure location. Went to the Thunderbird support site and finally entered a correct keyword in the search box and lo and behold found that I needed to exit the Logitech web cam (i.e. shut down the software) to allow the install to proceed, which it did.

You tried installing in safe mode which would (usually) not install most software that would be started in the full boot mode. I have read the thread and do not recall if you shut down any firewall, antivirus and other applications that you routinely run on startup. There also may be some dll that Quicken looks for (and finds) to indicate the previous version is still installed.

Sorry, I can't be of more help but maybe the above will trigger something you can try. Marty

How about reinstalling Q2000, then install Q2006 in the same folder. I believe Q2006 will ask you for permission to remove an older version (Q2000). Maybe Q2006 can remove Q2000 and install itself properly.

I have both, have not used them. I always think an IMAGE does re-install everything the way it was before, and I was afraid, that would or could be desatrious. I wanted to restore only individual files, a lot of them, but not all.

I have never gone to the extremes you have, but you can come here with your wife and talk to me and my wife any time you are in North Jersey, just not this weekend .

Do me a favor and look up imaging software (Acronis is a company that makes something like that, Norton/Symantec Ghost is another). With an image you can get back to a previous, working incarnation of your setup, then use data backups to get the data back. I should make an image of my system before I screw up next too.

I believe that the latest versions of each can pick individual files to restore. That assumes you have the correct versions somewhere.

The whole thing again reminds me of the old, old adage to separate data and programs ...
