Q2004 and Q2006 on same system

I understand only one version can exist and operate within one computer partition. RC White runs (or ran) a dual boot setup with different operating systems and could therefore run two versions of Q.

If you open your (as opposed to the set from the church) 04 files with Q06, you won't be able to work with them in Q04.

Yes, I think I COULD run multiple versions of Q - but I don't! I dual boot multiple versions of WinXP and Vista, and I run Quicken 2007 in all of them, but they all use the same copy of Quicken Basic 2007.

Now that the Vista beta is completed, I haven't booted into WinXP in a month or two and I'm running only Vista x64 RTM, although other versions are still installed.

John, I run Q2004 but would like to install Q2006. I understand once I've converted my files I can't go back, but can't I duplicate the q2004 files and allow Q2006 to convert the copy, and run the two systems in parallel for a while to make sure things are working? What is the "more complicated" aspect you refer to above?

Yes you can. That's just what I would do.

Beginning with Q2006, the Quicken installation process wants no other Quicken version installed, and will not install until you uninstall older versions or allow the install process to uninstall them for you.

The workaround is that once your earlier version is uninstalled, and Q2006 installed, there is nothing stopping you from reinstalling the older version.

There are occasional glitches when more than one version of Quicken is installed, none usually serious. And there are less of them with Q2006 since it (successfully) maintains separate Preferences for every Quicken file.
