still losing brokerage transactions during one step update

This has been going on for a long time and through at least two versions. Periodically I detect that either my brokerage has not included a transaction in the one-step-update or Quicken has not recorded it. I can't tell which because I can't see what Quicken is processing.

I notice this by doing frequently doing comparisons of brokerage holdings to Quicken holdings in ONLINE. Today it was pretty obvious even before that because I was notified that Quicken recognized the presence of a new security in the update (prompted me to accept a new security or match with an existing one), but there was no transaction that referenced this new security (it should have been a buy). I then go back to the website for my brokerage and track down the missing transaction. It was one of 4 buys for the same day (3/9 if that makes any difference). I can't think of a reason that just one buy of 4 should be dropped.

Is there any way I can view the file that Quicken is processing to see if the problem lies with my brokerage or Quicken?

You can access the log file for transactions. I've done this. They are not very clear, but with a little work, you should be able to decipher them. This web page shows how to access them.

When I had a problem, I copied the log file, reformatted them into easier to read lines of text using MS wordpad, and then deleted everything except for one or two of the securities that were affected. I then searched on Google to find details about how to interpret the log data. I eventually found that the securities that I was having a problem with were being mis-coded by Wells Fargo. It resulted in the number of shares being divided by 100. I provided that information to Wells Fargo through my financial adviser. She then sent it on to the VP in charge of the merger with Wachovia. He was grateful for the information and assured us that it would be raised in priority. That was almost a year ago. I'm hoping that in another year or so, they might address it. If I'm still investing there, I'll care.

Good luck.

It happened again this morning. A new preferred stock was purchased and the information that the stock should be added to my security list was presented to me but the associated buy wasn't recorded.

The dialog asking you to add the security to Quicken or match it to an existing Quicken security may have come from downloaded "holdings" for the account - the holdings are independent of the downloaded transactions.

In any event; one option to try when the downloaded transactions don't appear in the "Accept transactions ... " window below the account "register", is to go to the Online Center, select the financial institution and account, make sure the Transactions tab is selected ... and if you see the transactions listed there, click the "Compare to List" button (for non-investment accounts, the button would be "Compare to register").

Sometimes it works ... sometimes not.

[While you're in the Online Center, you might check your Holdings for the account.]
