Q2005/Mac can't open Q2001/Mac accounts file?

I'm setting up a new Mac mini. I've been using Q2001 on my old Mac. The new Mac came with Q2005 preinstalled, and I'd rather not install Mac Classic, so I figured I'd use Q2005 for a while. But when I try to import the accounts file I copied from the old Mac, it doesn't work. First it doesn't even want to try -- the old file has no file name extension and heaven knows what creator and type, as I haven't learned what I need under OSX to see that info. I added an extension like new Quicken files have, but then Quicken says "this is not a Quicken file".

Is there anything obvious I'm missing before I dive in deeper?

The type is "BDAT", the creator is "INTU." You can check this with Bare Bones Software's Super GetInfo, which also allows you to change type and creator if it's wrong.

I have no trouble converting a Quicken 2001 file (without an extension) to Quicken 2005 (it's automatic); however, that is with Quicken 2001 for OSX. If you can still open the file on your old computer with Q2001, you might try saving a copy, with all transactions to see if a new copy will be read OK by Q2005 on the Mini.
