[Q2007 Premier] My upgrade experience & the Password Vault problem.

After getting the Intuit email about 2007, and being the software junkie that I am, I took the plunge and downloaded 2007 Premier last night. This is a recount of the install process and what went wrong, which hopefully will help someone else in a similar situation.

The download and install were straight forward enough and all went well. At first run it found our account, I manage the wife's mothers banking as well since she lives with us, and prompted me through the file conversion process. After the conversion the file opened and all appeared normal and well. Unfortunately I did not have much time to explore the new version, but knew I would have ample time today. This AM as usual I opened Q2007 and proceeded to open mama-in-laws account, and as expected was walked through the conversion process. I then downloaded any new transactions into her checking account, no problems. I now went back to our account to download and new transactions. After entering the Password Vaults password I encountered and empty list where normally my FI and password are displayed along with the two options of downloading the latest cleared transactions and balances and to bring my payment information up to date. Everything I tried would not let me edit that list to add my FI, user Id, and password. Finally in frustration I deactivated *all* of my accounts that have online access and deleted the Password Vault. I then re-created the Vault, reactivated my accounts for online access, and was able to download from my FI.

Not considering the above hassle, I do like this version and the improvement to Quicken Home > Home tab. There are other improvements that I have not fully explored, but which look promising.

Thanks for the heads up! I'll try to remember to make a printout of the password vault before I start any upgrading. Such a hassle with the password vault is definitely a "I'll wait till that gets fixed"!

This sounds like a variation of a problem I had when I upgraded last night. I had problems with my Fidelity NetBenefits account, but all the rest of my accounts were fine. (I posted about this in a previous thread.)

One other problem I had is printing.... I got an error that the Quicken PDF printer was not installed, and that I should run a particular batch file to correct the situation. Then it wanted to communicate re the error to Intuit and gave me some reference number. Running the batch file, of course, made no difference. (I tried it multiple times, too.) I never used the Quicken PDF printer in 2006, but I know it was there, as I use PaperPort and have their "printers" installed, so I saw the Q PDF driver there. So apparently Quicken uses the PDF writer to generate print previews and print to a physical printer, too. Anyway, I'd been eager to see the enhancements to the printing module, but I gave up and went to bed. Today I rebooted the machine and opened a command prompt before running the batch file so I could see any output (of course there was none). But magically, this time the Q PDF printer magically appeared, and I have been able to print reports since then. So for some reason, the Q PDF printer got removed during the upgrade process, and a reboot and running of that batch file took care of the problem. I was impressed by the error message, in that it told me what to do and where to find the batch file, instead of giving me an unintelligible error message and having me contact support. :-)

The loans module has not been touched as usual, but it seems during the brief time I've had to play with QP2007, that Intuit has made quite a few usability enhancements and fixed a few bugs, too. The updated interface means I lose a few lines in the register, but then it's easier on the eyes, too. So far, I have to say that I like the new Quicken, and my upgraded data files are just a smidge larger than those of v2006.

I'm not sure there's a rebate this year, though. I see that Intuit is currently offering $10 off list price (for a limited time, they say), and Amazon has offered a pretty good deal along with the Intuit rebate in the past. This year, however, Amazon says there's no rebate, and their price (box only) was ~$7 less than Intuit's. So by the time you add shipping and the delay to get the actual software, I decided I'd spring for the Intuit download. We'll see if Staples comes out with their usual $20 gift card deal. I'd planned to wait, but I just had to have the new Quicken right away.

On another note, I've been a Quicken user since 1990 and have upgraded every year. Yet some years ago, I stopped receiving emails and snail mail re the new versions. I guess it's no big deal, since I never go for their offers anyway. The download is nice, I wish they'd give us an extra price break, considering they don't have to ship a boxed product.

Regards,

Margaret

I saw your post about the Fidelity problem, similar effect but lucky for you only one account was affected.

With 2006 the Q PDF printer only worked once, after that nothing I tried could bring it to life again. I ended up installing CutePDF and using that, and an added bonus CutePDF is available to any Windows program. Glad to hear you got the 2007 version to work. I will have to give it a try and see what happens now.

I agree about it being easier on the eyes, especially my middle aged ones. They need all the help they can get. :)

Ah the near instant gratification of the download delivery method. ;) Nice isn't it. According to the e-mail they gave us a $20 discount *and* about $99 in free gift software, Q WillMaker Plus ($79.99) and Encyclopedia Britannica ($29.99). I have not looked at WillMaker Plus, and I have not dl Encyclopedia Britannica yet as it was IIRC 300+ MB.

Take care.

Thanks for the tip.

Pardon my technological ignorance, but how do you print the Password Vault?

Thanks in advance (sheepishly)

Those moneygrubbing hucksters!

I convinced my daughter she needed to keep track of her finances, and I purchased a new copy of Quicken Premier on July 23rd. Now, since I had bought my own copy online, I coulda downloaded it onto her machine, but no - having been a programmer and being averse to theft, I paid $59 (no discounts!) to get the 'latest' version. And now there is a new release? What are we talking... 10 days or so?

Here I am worried about piracy, and the toons at INTUIT pirate from me! They could not have put a notice on the site that said a new release was coming soon?

The issue is not that she doesn't have the newest software, the issue is that the version she has will 'sunset' a FULL YEAR earlier - because of the date of purchase. Way to rip off the public, Intuit. Nice gift for the customer base.
