Vault password

I can't download transactions because the bank thinks I still have Q05, even though I was able to download some time ago with Q08, but after installing Q10 it is not recognized and I am unable to proceed. The vault password and nickname (which to use?) that I wrote down for Bank of America are rejected. A thread below, marked "change in vault for 2010" of Sep. 2010 is too old to open. Also, what is the explanation for the double logo for downloads, one a flag (IIRC) and one a little pencil? John Polasek

Have you tried contacting Bank of America?

There appears to be no way to tell Quicken I have v2010. They think I have 2005 and I have to buy 2008, which I believe is also stale information. I tried reinstalling it, no help. JP

1) What do you mean by "no way to tell Quicken?" 2) Can you log onto Bank of America's Web site, with the same logon information you're attempting to use with Quicken?

Originally when I decided to download, I opened a password vault with a password and its nickname. I was able to get one download, but it did not work thereafter. Today I tried again for a download and was led down a number of screens where I reregistered my information with an account name, and then used bank ID and PW that I have always used with the bank itself and it seemed to accept these, but I was instructed to check off Account Download on the Setup Tab which was nowhere to be found, till I closed and reopened and before I could proceed, it needed my Vault password, and in this case, my old vault password did work. This process is extremely inefficient and non transparent. Why did I have to reregister? I just tried to log on again and had to use my vault password but could not connect with the bank, probably meaning I was using a stale copy of Quicken and had opted for downloading, because contrrary to their message, I was able to immediately log directly into my bank account. The stereotyped message I kept getting is that version 2005 doesnt qualify for download even though I have since done it with 2008 but never yet with 2010. That's why I asked how I could tell them I had a valid copy. I was unable to find a way to register my disk. I am no longer such a booster for this program. John Polasek

The vault password is not the same as the password for your bank account. The vault password unlocks the One Step Update screen so that you can initiate a download. It will prompt you for the bank account passwords if you have not saved them in the Password vault.

Thank you, that makes good sense. I just tried another download and it accepted my vault password, but rejected the operation on the grounds that I was using Q2005 not Q2010 Iwill call the BOA phone number to see if that will resolve things John P q

It also sounds like your install of Q is confused--possibly the result of an incomplete upgrade. Check Control panel..add/remove programs to see what versions windows thinks are installed. Uninstall the program(s) and reinstall 2010 fresh. Makes sure there are no remnants of the program(s) floating around. Reboot your computer at least once to make sure the uninstall process has completed itself.

When you do the reinstall change the default folder name slightly so that it uses a different location on your hard drive to store the program in case there are still files floating around.

Thank you very much. In talking to BoA I was told that a code was set (which I did not write down, OBL3 or something, which I gather is a flag set when I had v2005) and she would fix it for me and to try tomorrow same time. I did get a download but to a fictitioius account, "checking1" which I encountered during setup of the Vault-I think it was their suggestion, and I may have adopted it as my file name. So I got a download to the otherwise empty checking1, but not to my real file. I have deleted checking1 and hoping to reset somehow (hint hint) with my real account name. Quicken downloading is a rabbit warren of obstacles. John Polasek

I think I found another hidden Quicken trap regarding upload passwords in a remark in a 2005 guide: If you have just one bank, which I do, you can't use the Vault password scheme . But there is no caveat and they let you fill out the vault data. And in fact the program asks for the Vault password (doesn't it?). So the Vault password was just idle typing and so the Vault password could not work and you get locked out trying it more than once. I'm locked out again with the message regarding 2005 version. Of interest is that the Quicken 2010 for Dummies is pretty worthless, updating not mentioned except for a passing reference. John Polasek
