Q2009, Fidelity S&P Index fund shares

When I download transactions from the Fidelity/Corporate 401K account, with Quicken 2009 Premier, it seems to get confused about my *ONE* (as in single) S&P index fund.

This is the number of shares reported on Fidelity SSGA S&P 500 INDEX, 5670.618

This is the cumulative shares reported in Quicken SSGA S&P 500 INDEX 5253.518 SSGA S&P 500 INDEX 1 52.752 SSGA S&P 500 INDEX 2 20.403 SSGA S&P 500 INDEX 3 5670.618

The INDEX 3, is what I think came down today, why the others don't total the same number of shared is very odd?

Each time I download, it wants me to create placeholders for shares in order to "make the number of shares match between my FI and Quicken" (or something like that).

I think this issue might have started when I tried to get smart and edit the asset class mixture for this S%P fund, in an attempt to better evaluate my stock/bond/cash balance across all investments.

In any event, this makes my market value appears ~2X the actual since the shares reported in Quicken are ~2x the actual.

How can I make this go away? I'm way over my head here. ;-)

I'm thinking of trashing the entire account and forcing a completely new download - but this would trash years of cost-basis, etc; although I not really sure if I care.

Any guidance?

Any help on this subject? I'm fixin' to backup and re-download my entire 401k account, and lose whatever historical basis costs (I assume). Not necessarily a biggie, but if there's another way......

?

If you don't care, I'm not sure what value my response will have. But ...

It's not clear just what events happened to produce the results you report. So the process to fix the problem may be a bit problematic.

It appears that your financial institution may have downloaded transactions for the same security with different security names, over time. Or you manually entered transactions for a downloaded security using a different security name.

That would not be a problem, if you had told Quicken that downloaded Name2 was the same as Name1 when Name2 first appeared. But if you allowed Quicken to create a new security for Name2, then future downloads would fail to keep your Quicken holdings correct, and you would get offers of placeholders.

You can (at least partially) recover from that choice by telling Quicken to unmatch the downloaded security names, then re-match them correctly.

To tell Quicken that an existing Quicken security name should not be matched to a downloaded security name, Edit the security in the Security List and uncheck the box, "Matched with online security". When all the names for your problem security (including the correct name) are unmatched, go to the Online Center, select the Holdings tab of the investment account and click "Compare to portfolio". Quicken should ask you what to do with any unmatched security names: tell Quicken to use (match to) the proper security name from your Security List.

[Security names that are not used in any Quicken transactions can be deleted.]

Backup before trying any of the above.

[If it is your intention to record all your actual security transactions in Quicken, you should never need a placeholder. If Quicken offers one, that should be a reminder to verify your transactions and holdings for that security. And you should refuse the offer of the placeholder.]
