Question about Average Annual Return

I am looking to calculate the average annual return for my investments

- 1yr, 3yr, 5yr, etc. I thought IIR would do this for me, but I'm getting loads of "N/A" as my answers, and I don't know why.

It seems that even though I've owned the security for a long time, unless there is some activity during the period in question, I will get "N/A" as the answer. Ill only get an answer if something happened during that period.

For instance, lets say I bought ABC Corp in 2005 and I did NOT get any dividends since then, nor did I purchase more stock. It's just been sitting there. Then I'll get "N/A" as the answer for 3 and 5 year IIR. Why? Doesn't Quicken know what the value of that stock was 3 and 5 years ago? If it knows the value of the stock 3 years ago, and knows the value of the stock today, why can't it tell me the average annual return?

I understand that if I've owned the security for less than 3 or 5 years, then the answer should be "N/A". That's OK. But if I've owned it for longer than that, why should the answer be "N/A"?

Maybe IIR doesn't give me what I'm looking for. So what will tell me what I'm looking for - the average annual return for each security in my portfolio, whether I've had activity or not during that period?

Thanks for any assistance.
