Quicken 2010 Home and Business

The spouse and are setting up a home business and are considering Quicken H & B to to track our business finances. I have been using Quicken since it was released in the 80's so I know my way around the program.

I don't expect a lot from this feature of program and until we get our feet wet with our business (don't know how far we will go so don't hold your breath for the IPO! :-) ) I don't want to spend money on something just for the business. Maybe someday but no now.

I am looking to track our income and expenses and create appropriate reports etc.

What are your experiences of using this program? I would expect it to be similar to Quicken home but with some additional features appropriate to running a business.

What do you like? .... don't like?, any limitations you have found.

Thanks in Advance Marty

Hi, Marty.

What kind of business? The accounting for a retail business is MUCH different from that for a service business. If you will have employees - even ONE employee - you will encounter a whole fleet of different complications.

These are just a couple of the details that anyone would need to know about your business before he or she could begin to advise whether H&B would be suitable for you. And, since I've never used Quicken H&B, I'll stay away from the subject, except for these opening caveats.

Good luck with your business!

I have QB H&B 2008. I bought it with the idea of tracking our personal and business (Sole P) all in one program. Originally I had my business in QuickBooks but it is easier for me to have all in one place.

I do not like Quicken for business purposes. A/R & A/P are handled strangely. Maybe it is because I am used to double entry bookkeeping that QuickBooks provides. Quicken just does not cut it. Quicken was designed for tracking personal finances. Intuit introduced the H&B version as a cheap alternative over QuickBooks Pro for business.

So if you need to send invoices or track your bills then my suggestion is to get QuickBooks instead. Staples has it on sale right now for $100 net cost. $200 purchase online with $100 Staples gift card.

I use it for my wife's business here in the UK (selling goods and services), and run a separate file for home accounts. It does the job, no problems with invoices. It's simple and does the job perfectly as far as we are concerned, easy t correct mistakes, but it really does depend on how complex the setup will be.

How are you going to handle the mail order ? via website or taking orders in person ??? also... if an artist... going to craft or art shows, etc ? Payment, shipping, tracking, etc - how to handle credit card's and flow into book keeping, etc Lots of little financial tidbits with very little volume, so all manual entries.
