I have 3 data file sets; I notice that one is missing the QSD file extension. What is this file used for? What is the significance of missing the QSD file?

If you're using Q2005, the significance is zero. The QSD file extension was last used in Q2004.
I use Quicken 2006; I therefore assume that the file is not needed??
