TurboTax 2010 - beginning

Wonder if anyone has bought and installed TurboTax 2010 yet ? Just waiting a little until more of the tax rules settle down.

Presumably it will be a lot like previous years. Intuit takes the 2010 version, changes the name to 2011 and then releases updates every 3 or 4 weeks as the forms become finalized. The IRS has already announced that they won't accept itemized returns until February as they aren't ready to process them. Can't see Intuit beating the IRS.

BTW - The Costco coupon book for January has a $10 off the Costco price coupon for TurboTax starting January 6th. Accepted at Costco.com as well.

I'm seeing quite few TV ads for the free online version. I've never used it but the price sure seems right :)

Any one have pros or cons?

The thought of entrusting my detailed financial data in the form of a tax return to Intuit strikes me as being a bit questionable. While I know that's what Intuit wants (see the many posts here on their Mint strategy), it will be a long time before I buy into that - free or not.

I understand, but aren't we doing pretty much the same thing when we eFile?

is this posted online somewhere as an IRS announcement ?

Probably, but there might be a little less risk if the data is transiting only under IRS rules for data handling vs. being stored on an Intuit server for an extended period of time.

Bought it Wednesday at Costco. Installed it yesterday (Thursday). No problem so far. Found my old tax file and migrated the data. Not going much further until W2's start coming in.

I purchased a copy several weeks ago from Costco in order to get a handle on my yearend tax situation. I like to input data directly in forms rather than go through the interview process and I've had nothing but problems. Unlike previous versions, TT10 uses a great deal of memory when viewing forms, sometimes approaching 1GB and it's crashed several times. Also, inputting data into forms directly is extremely slow as TT10 seems to process each key stroke as you are typing.

I don't have the fastest computer (Dell with XP, 3.4 GHZ, and 4GB of RAM) but TT10 is a LOT slower than TT09 or earlier. TT09 works fine but TT10 does not.

WOW - Yeah, as the bloated software gets mainstreamed, it's getting harder and harder to be productive.

Don't recall if it was Quicken or Turbotax - or both - that came with Microsoft .NET software that had to be installed.

Tis the way of all software. You need more powerful machines to operate the later versions. Ahh remember the days of Atari

------------------------------------------------------------------------ Would you expect TT10 to grab 1GB of RAM? Because that what it does if I open enough forms. The difference between TT09 and TT10 is startling. I've been working to amend my 2009 tax return so I've been using TT09 a lot and it works fine on my computer regardless of how may forms I have open. TT10 is a disaster.

Big and slow.... They must have re-written it in Java. Atari? I remember the days of the 1401 and 7080.
