Why does the data change when I rename the Quicken file?

Perplexing!

When I rename my Quicken file in Windows, the load it into Quicken 2008 H&B, my net worth goes down to 1/3 the amount!

Is there some reason this should be?

Hi, Gary.

I've never used H&B, but renaming a Quicken file in Windows sounds like s recipe for Instant Disaster! :>(

In Quicken 2009 Deluxe, we can use File | File Operations | Rename. While I haven't tried it, I assume that this menu option will rename the *.QDF file AND all the related files in the fileset.

As you probably know, what Intuit persists in calling "a file" is actually a set of related files. They all have the same name (QDATA, by default), with different extensions (QDATA.QDF, QDATA.QEL, etc.). Renaming only the QDF file without renaming ALL the others is sure to cause confusion - or worse. There may well be other entries in the Registry or in some subsidiary Quicken file (like Quicken.ini) that also need to be updated for the renamed files.

When you post back, be sure to also mention the operating system you are using. Some things work differently in WinXP Pro SP3 than in Vista Ultimate x64 SP1, for example.

I'm using XP Pro SP3 on 1 machine, Vista Home Basic (32 bit, NOT SP1) on another. I have not seen anything different in Q2008 Deluxe between them, but haven't compared things exhaustively.

What differences should I watch out for? Generally I am backing up from 1 machine to the other, if that helps.

Hi, Han.

Is your Reply in the right thread? Sounds like sort of non-sequitur. :^}

Hi RC!

You had said: "Some things work differently in WinXP Pro SP3 than in Vista Ultimate x64 SP1, for example."

So I am saying: "I'm using XP Pro SP3 on 1 machine, Vista Home Basic (32 bit, NOT SP1) on another. I have not seen anything different in Q2008 Deluxe between them, but haven't compared things exhaustively."

and then asking: "What differences should I watch out for? Generally I am backing up from

1 machine to the other, if that helps."

Your differences between XP and Vista with regard to the workings of Quicken were what exactly?

I value your insights, so I'd like to profit from your expertise!!!

Hi, Han.

Oh. I see.

I didn't mean that Quicken itself works differently on Vista than on WinXP. But I'm sure you've noticed A FEW differences between WinXP and Vista. :^}

I didn't have anything specific in mind, but sometimes we have problems moving files from WinXP to Vista because of permissions and such restrictions. User "HanVista" might not have permission to copy "Han.QDF" from the "HanXP" folder, for example, until HanVista takes ownership of that folder. Remember, I'm a one-computer guy and never learned much at all about permissions and such until Vista forced me to learn a little about them. And, since the OP was going to be renaming and otherwise manipulating Quicken files while moving from WinXP to Vista I just wanted to add this little "heads-up" in addition to the usual caveats about such operations.

Also, I seldom use the backup/restore programs. (I use Xcopy much more often.) But I do recall having problems trying to Restore from floppies with a version (Win2K?) that did not match the Backup (Win98?) that I had used. Perhaps Vista can restore from WinXP's backup. I'll leave that to you and others who might know, because I don't know that.

Yes there are differences. My main complaint is that the ballyhoed search in Vista is for me a Royal PITA. Otherwise things seem OK. I am the main user of this laptop, and I did turn off the GD User Access Control.

I have little or no difficulty moving files around. I understand the concepts of user permissions but don't pay too much attention to it.

Not sure I understand what you really mean here. I do copy files using Karen's Replicator (freeware, in case you need to know). I think this is just a semi-fancy front for Xcopy, but it runs automatically at preset times, erasing or not previously copied files. I find it very handy also to copy files back and forth to my memory stick, which I use to take files to work and back home. It easily copies across my LAN.

I use a backup program, but (knocking on wood) have not had to use restore. I copy important files to another machine, and hope I can regenerate this machine if it ever croaks. I am still planning on getting another hard drive for it, so I can restore the machine to factory default and update this d@mn3d Vista Home Basic to SP1. All hotfixes ae installed, except SP1. That keeps failing, probably because of some software I knew I couldn't do without, which now interferes .
