Can eFiles be "cancelled" after submission?

Is there a grace period (hopefully several days) during which a successful eFile can be "cancelled"?

There is a grievous error in the returns that were prepared and eFiled by my CPA.

(Long story about why I could not catch the error during review.)

Understandably, my CPA is too busy with tax season and personal issues to meet and discuss my options, as I requested. So I am hoping for some knowledgeable insight here.

If there is an opportunity to do a "mulligan" without having to do amended returns, and if there is a critical time limit for that, I will go back to my CPA to take appropriate action __now__.

Otherwise, I'll back off in the interest of maintaining good working relations. After all, I'm still depending on the CPA for one more set of returns. (Sigh.)

I assume that when you say "successful" you mean that the e-file was accepted by the IRS. There is no grace period and no way to cancel it. You should wait until it's been processed and any refund has been paid, then file an amended return to correct the error.

Thanks. I figured as much. But I had to ask, in the unlikely case that there was a time-sensitive opportunity.

Live and learn. I reviewed the returns. I called attention to some missing supporting statements that were referenced in the returns. I was told I "would not see" them until the final return is filed -- as if that is SOP. And since I provided the data for those statements, I thought "well, maybe it is a no-brainer". I have never approved anything but the complete returns in 13 years of doing this.
