eFile directly with IRS, Callif FTB; no middleman?

Is it possible to eFile with the IRS and Calif FTB directly, with no middleman?

I use TurboTax (PC version, not online) to prepare my returns.

I believe I can use TT to eFile.

I would prefer not to.

It's not the cost. It's the privacy and identity security.

I would be okay with a middleman if the tax returns are encrypted/decrypted end-to-end between my PC and the IRS/FTB computers. But I don't know how to get such assurances, if that were even true.

You definitely cannot file directly with the IRS. Some states may allow that, but I doubt it. Your data are safer going through an intermediary anyway. See IRS Pub. 1345, Handbook for Authorized IRS e-file Providers of Individual Income Tax Returns,

for the various standards and requirements for participation in the IRS e-file program.

Thanks. I'll check it out. But your response has been reassuring.
