EIN

Does anyone know what's going on with the IRS and EIN's? Person is a foreign individual who created a US nonprofit corporation. He applied for an EIN months ago, and hasn't received it and hasn't been able to get any information about it. I've suggested that he phone the IRS on its EIN telephone number for foreigners, but apparently he hasn't been able to reach anyone.

Any information, thoughts or ideas?

Thanks.

I believe he is out of luck until July 15 at the earliest. The IRS is nearly completely shut down. They have begun to call back some essential employees, but the workspaces have to comply with the government recommendations about safe distancing. There is a tremendous backlog of other essential processes that need to start up first. Consumer and practitioner phone/fax lines will probably be among the last to reopen because the IRS knows that 99% of the calls will be about the economic impact payments and they won't have any more information than is available through the online sources.

If you Google "IRS mission critical functions", you will find an IRS web page that details what is (not) operational.

Thanks Ira. That's very helpful.
