5880,00.html on this page, there are links to spread sheets with IRS wealth statistics. This page states "An estimated 2.7 million U.S. adults in 2004 had gross assets of $1.5 million or more. . . . . A little less than 1.6 million, or

57.0 percent, of top wealth holders were men, while just under 1.2 million were women. Overall, male top wealth holders had a higher average net worth than their female counterparts."

One of their spreadsheets shows a breakdown, including the figure that there are 47,000 people with total net worth exceeding $20 Million.

How does the IRS arrive at these figures?

About 2% of the adult (head of households) were worth $1.5M. Only about 0.1% are worth $10m or more; that is a pretty fast drop off.
