What's with this odd IRS notice?

May 11, 2015 3 Replies

I efiled on 4/8. Saturday my refund went from received to approved; they say it will be deposited in my bank on 5/13.

Today I got a mailed notice from the IRS dated 5/18. (yeah, it is dated next week) It says "We're holding your refund until we finish reviewing your tax return". Notice CPO5

Does everyone get this, or did they actually review my return? Why is it dated next week? It is obsoleted by the online notice that my refund was approved? Thanks

Does the email ask you to send any information or click on a link? It may be a fake email scam. The messed up date seems really phishy to me.

It seems to me that most IRS CP letters are dated about a week ahead. I suspect that is to give you longer to respond.

At this point just wait to see if there is more mail and what they want to look at.

CP05 letter would be on paper, not email.

My guess is that the review has already happened, but the letter was issued out of sync. If there had been no review of your refund, you normally would have received it in April, so it already has been delayed for review, and is now released. If you get the full refund to your bank, that should be the end of it.
