NJ 501 c(3) - salestax on memberships?

Jan 26, 2008 2 Replies

In Bergen County, NJ. A genealogical society, 501 c(3) "charges" membership fees/donations of their members to provide the services of the society. Does NJ levy sales tax on such membership fees, or are they considered "donations" qand hence not subject to salestax?

Thanks in advance for your answers!

NJ has changed the rules at least 2 times in the past 2 years on this as the gov't insatiable appetite to bring in new revenue. Many are taxable now.

You have to read the new rules from the 2007 tax legislation as to how they apply to your organization.
