no acknowledgement from state taxes

I sent my federal and state taxes at the same time by certified mail with return confirmation. I got the confirmation from federal over a week ago and the check for taxes due was also cashed. However, for the state return, I have neither received confirmation not has the check been cashed.

I guess I could wait another week and see if it shows up, but the delay is definitely unusual. I have been sending my taxes this way for the last several years and both confirmations usually arrive in the same week.

If I don't get the confirmation, what do I do? Is there some number that I can call to find out if I need to re-file my taxes and send in another check?

You can ask the post office to trace the certified mail and tell you whether it was delivered.

Where to call would be different for each state, and you didn't say what state you are in. You should be able to find contact information on your state's taxation web site. You can find a link to the web site for your state at

Try Track & Confirm on the USPS website- usps.com. I'm pretty sure it works for certified mail. I know it works for delivery confirmation mail.

This will tell you if delivered. The state may just be slow at this time of year processing returns and checks. I would wait at least another week or two. You have proof of mailing so should alleviate any penalties even if lost. If still no information, then I would call the state tax department to see if they have a record of receiving it.
