Showing specific tax payments on check stubs?

My son just got a new job for 20% more than his old job. He got his first pay check and it is lower than the old one. He is confused.

The new check stub just gives his gross pay and the amount of the check, with a note saying the difference is due to tax payments made on his behalf to the government. I have never seen a check stub that didn't give specific amounts for federal withholding, state withholding, Social Security, etc. Is it not an obligation to show such detail?

I expect the reason for his low take home pay is because he told them zero allowances instead of two, but without detail it is hard to know.

While it is possible that the state where your son works allows such payroll reporting, the states that I'm familiar with all require that each paycheck include a detailed listing of what was included and deducted to reach the net paycheck.
