State Tax Deduction On 1040 ?

Hello,

Please bear with me a bit; will blame it on old age now. Using Form 1040, etc. Live in Mass.

For my 2015 taxes which I did last year (2016), I had to include a check with my State Taxes for an additional amount over what was deducted and what I sent them as Estimated Taxes (the 4 est. payments throughout the year)

Is this additional amount I paid to the State (last year for the 2015 taxes) now deductible on my 2016 Federal 1040 Return Sch. A which I'm doing now ?

Thanks, as always. Appreciate the help, Bob

Yes, any state income tax that you paid in 2016 can be included in your deduction for state income tax on your 2016 Schedule A. That includes the amount you paid with the 2015 state tax return that you filed in 2016.

However, if your payment included a penalty amount, you can deduct only the actual state income tax, not the penalty.

Yes. Any state/local income tax you paid in 2016, whether through withholding, estimated taxes, or with your 2015 tax return, is deductible on your 2016 return.
