*Somewhere* recently I saw a news item about a new 2012 tax year form to be used for single/HOH federal tax filers who are subject to community income splitting as a result of married/RDP status at the state level (California, Nevada, Washington are the three states where this might apply).
I've reviewed the IRS draft pubs list in reverse date order, I've searched by site using Google, I've searched my saved inbox, I've searched LinkedIn and TaxAlmanac tax discussion groups, can't find it. I can't believe that I was actually viewing the form for a moment and failed to save a local copy.
Found it. This would also apply to federal MFS returns from domiciliaries of community property states (so not just CA, NV, and WA). And it applies to 2013 tax year, not 2012.
Can't find the actual form any more, though.

"IRS Announces Form 8958 July 6, 2012 ? 3:12 pm
The IRS has announced the creation of Form 8958, Allocation of Tax Amounts Between Married Filing Separate Spouses, Same-Sex Spouses, or Registered Domestic Partners with Community Property Rights. The form will be available for use by individuals required to allocate income in community property states beginning in 2013 and can be used to file federal returns by individuals residing in Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin."
I'm on the distribution list for all IRS pronouncements and Treasury releases relating to taxes. I can't find anything official from the IRS on this form. As far as I can tell, the redgeartech post is the only info available on a new form. It's interesting that the post does not have a link to the announcement.
Yes, I too was surprised that I could find zero other references to it. It could be a bogus announcement, but why would it be? It's not traditional spam, that's for sure. Maybe software developers get info/specs in advance under non-disclosure agreements and someone at RedGear goofed?
It could be my imagination that I actually viewed the form at the time of the original announcement.
In any case, it's certainly a form that would be useful and has been needed since forever (since it affects MFS federal filers from all community property states).
Here it is, available from the IRS at last. I wonder why RedGear was the only vendor who had any advance info on this that they shared with the world....
