Separate addresses bervause of health issues

Because of health issues, I have moved into a facility that can provide better living conditions than I can get at home. There is no plan for me and my spouse to divorce or legally separate. We will file 2011 tax forms as married and expect to continue doing so.

  1. I see space for only one address on Form 1040. Can two addresses be reported for 2012 income? How?

  1. What is the best way to inform the IRS (and the CA FTB) for our new situation?

Any return can only have one address. If you file a joint return and you both maintain separate homes.... you can use whichever address you want. If for whatever reason, you can't come to agreement on whose home to use... you can always open a PO Box or get a private mail service and use that address. Your address on a return does not have to be where you physically reside.

The only time it might matter is if for some reason the facility you are staying at is in another state. The feds won't care, but the states might.
