Experian report "linked addresses"

I have requested the basic 2 reports from Equifax & Experian, and whilst the Equifax report is as expected, (ie just showing credit card applications etc) the Experian report has an extra section showing several "linked addresses" which link my old family home address to several addresses that my sisters have lived in over the last few years!

Is there any risk that all these linked addresses could impact on my credit ratings as some of them are student digs where god knows who may have lived in since my sisters moved out!??

If the addresses have no valid connection with you then you should ask Experian & Equifax to remove them.

If however the linkage was created by a financial institution (e.g. a mortgage lender) then the credit ref agencies reply that they are unable to remove the linkage unless the lender tells them to - this is what I found when trying to remove an address I had not lived in for some 7 years, even if I provided proof of the mortgage having been repaid.

It can be hard to get rid of linkages, in some circumstances.

I doubt that is legal today.

I doubt it ever has been. Sounds like an open and shut case of defamation.

Sound like they're holding data about YOU which is not correct. It should be down to them to correct this and not pass you onto some other institution to correct the mistake.

As they are holding this data about you, they have a duty under the data protection act to ensure that it is relevant and accurate. Be sure to tell them that if they pass the buck.

Let us know how you get on...

I have it in writing from Experian, but of course you could be right.

The problem is getting through to the robots that staff the "customer interface department" of most companies these days. I wrote to them 3 times and each time they came back with the same reply. They can't remove a linked address without authority from the financial institution that created the link - in this case it was First Direct, with a mortgage paid off in 1995. Eventually I gave up bothering because I have all the credit cards I need (2), etc.

Getting an ex wife unlinked can be difficult too, if you still pay her child maintenance for example. I sort-of managed to do it though, by sending them a written statement that she is not in any way related to me :)
