ATM Theft By Muggers

I pass this information on without any verification, as I received it:

******************** > If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your PIN # in reverse. > For example, if your pin number is 1234, then you would put in 4321. > The ATM system recognizes that your PIN number is backwards from the ATM card you placed in the machine. > The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to the robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to the location. > This information was recently broadcast on CTV by Crime Stoppers, > however it is seldom used because people just don't know about it.*********************

It sounds like Urban Legend, but has anyone heard this before, and who's going to be the first to test it?

According to the above, a "palindromic" PIN would result in the police being called whenever you made a withdrawal. ;-)

According to the two links below, and many others, this is NOT true.

Again, from the links below, such a system was first imagined in 1994 and patented in 1998 by Joseph Zingher, but he wasn't successful in selling it to the banks.

I strongly recommend that anyone who tempted to forward "useful emails" checks them out first. It only takes a few seconds to type something into Google.

Haven't you noticed the sirens and flashing blue lights every time you draw cash?

I had my car broken into in Dublin while we were looking around.

When we went back to it we saw a smashed window, our possessions taken and the car was immobilised.

There was a note from the police on the front seat. we went to the police station. Someone had seen the crooks breaking in to our car and had gone to the police station. The police went to the car and arrested the crooks. Can you imagine what would have happened if it was in London?

We got our car started and told the police which hotel we would be staying at. As we were approaching the hotel in our car we noticed that the hotel was down a one way street and we'd have to take a detour to get to it. An undercover police car pulled up next to us and the driver had been at the police station. He pointed out we should go down the street to get to the hotel. We said we knew where it was but it was a one way street. His reply: "Ah, nobody takes any notice of that"!

Irish police are a different class!

Petty crime is (I believe) on the increase in N Ireland. A lady friend's son and family live near Belfast, and he told me that now the I*A are inactive(?) the knee-cappings and other punishments have stopped, and there is no longer an effective deterrent. ;-)
