Balance Transfers

Is it possible to do a balance transfer onto one of my cards from a relatives card or do the Card companies have rules to stop this?

I have seen it done a few times - but it may depend on the credit card company.

I would have thought that the card company would be putting themselves at risk if they did this, because what would happen if the cardholder later claimed there had been a mistake in the card number entered for the transfer and wanted his money back? Mind you, I'm not sure how they could check that the card number you give them is actually your *own* card! I presume they send the money via BACS, and that the money is allocated on the basis of 16 digit reference number rather than by surname, so if you were to give your own surname and someone elses 16 digit number then the payment would still be processed ok.

You may be right, but such deception wont work with bank accounts. Unless both the account number and the name match for a transfer between current accounts, it wont be processed. My guess is that things are similar for credit cards.

It is also risky to deliberately give false details in such a situation. If a bank finds out that they have been deliberately misled by someone, they sometimes become reluctant to deal with them again.
