Bank Card Receipts - Hoarding in the Tills?

Seen just now on the lunchtime news, at last theyve caught a large retailer dumping our card receipts unshredded. In this age of online transcations and realtime processing can anyone in banking or retailing tell us WHY the retailer has to keep a scrappy bit of paper in their till when we leave, bearing full or partial card information? It was not long ago our local Spar shop was printing card receipts bearing the whole 16-digit card number. This does not apply to all Spar shops I should add, only those unwilling to upgrade their tills and/or data comms. Why on earth are the likes of Tescos still hoarding these bits of paper? Are the night shift pouring through them writing down the amounts with a pencil for later processing?!

Actually, I've just noticed in at least two shops (one being Sainsbury's), they no longer print off the till receipt that they used to put in the till, just the customers copy, which has 12 *'s and then the last four digits.

I can never work out what happens at Waitrose, because the majority of the times I go in there, they are still using signature, because the PIN isn't working. When one day they asked me to sign and it came out nothing like the signature on the card, I just laughed and said I'd forgotton what my signature was because I hardly used it anymore. Till tubby just grimaced and asked for 2nd ID. I said I didn't have any. He said he'd have to call a manager. I said 'forget it', and walked out the store and went to Sainsburys and got my shopping for 75% of the price.

So Waitrose staff actually look at signatures and wouldn't accept one that you acknowledge looked nothing like the one on the card. "till tubby" deserved a thank you rather than your contempt but they obviously realised that they were dealing with an idiot rather than a fraudster.

And it took you three days to come up with that sarcastic comment. You've obviously needed help from your care assistant, retard.

Yep, I had a alarm set on the computer to notify me the very moment the post appeared (as I do with every single post on usenet) and then another to go off a set number of days later (and three is good) so that I can nonchalantly reply having spent the intervening time doing nothing else but ponder upon its content (as I do with all my replies).
