Slow tills

Dec 02, 2005 2 Replies

I have been looking into a problem we have here with tills (especially till

1's) being slow to close the trasaction - it can take a minute to a minute and a half to print a receipt. Obviously this is a considerable delay.

I have heard some people mention that the dongle and the printer shouldn't be on the same port. However, it should be noted that this delay did not exist when the tills were first set up at our stores.

The other day I decided to see if reindexing the database would have any affect. It does seem to have made an improvement, even if only slight. I have since scheduled a defrag on all our store servers, and have since defragged the disk that the database sits on.

Is there anything else worth doing? I have read about defragging the database itself, but I don't actually know how to do this - ideally it would be something I can schedule to run once a week.

Ozzie,

Look and see if you have another printer installed using the same port. Have seen this happen if an HP printer is listed in Printers section, but is no longer in use, but didn't delete the printer and drivers from the Printers section.

These tills never get a printer installed, apart from the reciept printer using OPOS. This afternoon I will get an opportunity to try out some software I found that looks like it should be able to do what I want. It is called Visual Defrag which supposedly defrags the internals of the database. It also has a scheduler (not available in the demo - a pity because that would be the ideal way to test it - let it run overnight) which is the other part that I want.

So I will be busy this afterno> Ozzie,
