benefits - property rental

could someone please advise on this situation? I would appreciate it.

my daughter claims disablity living allowance and lives in a flat sourced by a housing charity and gets support from several agencies. I have a property that is my only residence. I may be getting a job overseas next year and wondered if I could rent my place to my daughter. I cannot afford to let her stay in it for nothing, could she claim housing benefit to pay me a "reasonable market rent"?

thanks,

henry

Erm...she has her home sorted out and financed. You want to jeopardise that...I almost said "rob her" of that...and then one day presumably you will come home and what then for your daughter?

If you want "a reasonable market rent" then the reasonable place to look for it is presumably the arms-length open market?

she does not like the place that she is in, near big rough estate, racing hatchbacks by boy racers etc. I would like answers to the question please.

thanks, henry

Yes she can - but you need to get agreement prior to her actually moving in. There is also an agreement (I think its called a reference rent) on how much a suitable house to meet her needs would cost and housing benefit won't let her go over that.

There could be some pitfalls for your daughter though. She is likely to have a secure tenancy where she is. If you have a mortgage they would need to know you are letting it out. Giving a secure tenancy might be a problem for the lender- so your daughter may lose some security.
