Banks / pre-dated letters

Hi,

On Friday, I went into my local branch to close an account. The account was slightly (about 14) in the red - my last transaction had left it with a slight credit, but more recent charges had taken it into the red.

Today (Sunday - presumably received Saturday) I received a 1st class letter from them dated 15th (prior to my visit!) referring to a letter dated

9/10/07 (which I didn't receive and) which they said they sent me, saying insufficient funds etc ....

I am just wondering if it happens that banks conveniently pre-date letters and / or refer to letters which haven't been sent?

Yes, I am cynical, but there are certain institutions that I just do not trust.

Thanks, Iain

Why do people insist on closing bank account? Why not do what I and a few of my friends do? Withdraw all the money except for a couple of bob and cancel any direct debits, preferably in writing, then forget about that account. I have 3 like that and I get a statement every year. Never had any problems. Dave

Thanks for the information, but I am still looking for an answer to my question.

I've just had a phone call from the bank about closing the account. The balance that they gave me was less than half the figure (in the red) I was given on Friday. They will be closing my account tomorrow and writing off the charges. Interesting.
