Broken Partnerships

I wonder how long, after the break of a partnership, should be relating documents be kept. It was acrimonious and much of the exchange of communication was by email. It was five years ago and is it now safe to dispose of the papers/emails.

I would plan to keep them forever - perhaps scan the paperwork. You never know when it might come in useful.

I bet the other party will be keeping copies - despite what s/he says.

Five years is not enough, for a totally different reason to the one you might have been thinking about.

Self Assessment! There is a need to retain relevant papers until at least nearly 6 years after the end of the last year of assessment in which the partnership business operated. That is, say the business ceased on say 20.09.01 ... five years ago today ... its last year of assessment was 2001-2002 .... and therefore there is a need to retain tax relevant papers until at least 31.01.08.

OK, well it is worth mentioning that certain insurance documents must now be kept for at least 40 years.

Thanks for the replies and the papers don't take up much space and I will keep them I guess. I was hoping to throw out to get rid of the nasty memories they invoke.
