The most obvious problem with that claim is that you cant demonstrate any genetic effect with say heroin addiction, or why we have gone for VERY long periods with almost no one addicted to heroin etc.

You seriously think the UK has not any influence over the US? Tony was the main reason that the US even went to the UN to seek a resolution, that is having an influence.

There is plenty of research that suggests a susceptibility to drug dependence has a strong genetic factor. For example it was found that people with one version of a gene had a much harder time giving up tobacco.

But like most things there is a strong environmental influence. If drugs are not available people cannot take them. If people do not try drugs they will not get addicted.

One the other side, if methadone is available, many addicts can live productive lives.

A tendency to obesity clearly has genetic links, but companies spend a lot of money advertising food.

I had an operation a few years ago. Pethedine, an opiate, was administered pre-op. It felt absolutely wonderful.

You have your answer if you look at what happened in the end result, instead at looking at process. The US wanted to regardless of UN support. Blair did not really, he wanted UN support. You seem to be happy to define the UK as a nation in US terms with the sop of arguable 'influence'. (see first sentence)

Well I know that the UK does have a huge influence on the US, it is not a command and control influence, but influence of a freind whose council the US values.

Nevertheless, it was presented as a major reason by Tony Blair (whatever you or I personally think about it).

That opium/heroin exports have gone up tenfold since occupation suggests that Blair would have given *any* reason to justify war. If reasons have to be invented because the public won't go along otherwise then it suggests that our democracy is in trouble OR we'll toss the likes of Blair at the next election.
