Childrens online savings accounts - why so difficult?

Hi,

I am after a savings account for my kids (8,11) where I can deposit and withdraw the money via a transfer to my own bank, and where the kids can login and see how much is in there (but not change it).

This is such an obvious thing, in these days when kids tend to have internet access...

I did a google for childrens savings accounts and haven't found anything like it. In fact most of the "online" links don't exist; when you phone up the place they say it is branch based, etc.

In fact the amount of money is so small, typically under £200, that I could just run a virtual account for them while keeping the money in my pocket - a program running on a www server which has a simple interface for deposits and withdrawals (without actually transferring any money of course because this is all virtual) and which continually adds interest at some preset rate say 0.0136% per day.

The best thing of course is having to come along to the branch with a birth certificate, passport, driving license, shotgun license, a urine sample, a dna sample, a set of fingerprints and some old teeth...

Any suggestions?

This sounds more like an account of yours that your children can view.

Gove them a bit more responsibility!

The banks seem to put kids' savings accounts into the "too difficult" box; perhaps it relates to new money laundering regs. The Alliance & Leicester gives a decent interest rate, but it is a "passbook" type account, operates through branch only (nearest is 15 miles away). No internet access, I can't even transfer cash into it from my own accounts, have to post them a cheque.
