Whilst urging me to get a mortgage in principle, my bank has told me that your credit score is only affected if you have more than four credit checks per month.
Is this nonsense?

If that's the way they want to calculate a credit score, that's up to them. No, not nonsense - they can calculate it whatever way they like!
Every time you have a credit check done on you a 'footprint' to this effect appears on the credit history. How much notice a particular lender takes of these footprints is up to them. You bank appears to disregard four of them. But they can't speak for other lenders.
