D. Tel./Heffer: Comment on Ian Leaf case

Tempted to take a leaf from his book The Daily Telegraph (London); Dec 3, 2005; SIMON HEFFER; p. 023

I know that when someone fiddles his taxes he robs all of us, but don't you have just a sneaking admiration for Ian Leaf, who broke the all-comers record this week when rumbled - eventually - for a pounds 55 million tax fraud? If I were the Inland Revenue, I wouldn't have had him sent to jail; I'd have enlisted him to help track down other swindlers. Also, won't the Government ever realise that the longer it persists in levying hideous levels of taxation on hard-working and enterprising people, the more it will encourage them to engage in scams like Leaf's? And just imagine what that pounds 55 million would have been wasted on if the Treasury had nabbed it. That, after all, is why most of us, in condemning what he has done, will salute his audacity in having done so.
