First Time Buyers Strike

THE PETITION

First Time Buyers are now currently priced out of the market and are going on strike, refusing to enter the market again until prices reach a sustainable level. The lending practices of the banks are irresponsible and should be regulated. The government should immediately withdraw its attempt to keep the market afloat with its half a house scheme.

DESIRED OUTCOME

The government immediately abandons it's attempts to prop the housing market and accepts the boom and bust cycle it has put in place.

WHO WE NEED TO INFLUENCE

The government, the general public and estate agents.

HOW LONG WILL WE CAMPAIGN

The end of 2005

WHO TO CONTACT

Can we also have a strike to force down petrol/diesel prices as well, please? ;-) They've been creeping up far too quickly recently...

Oh yeh, BTW - I fancy a nice new shiny car soon, but all the good ones are just sooooo expensive - can you do something about that for me too? Thanks very much!!

Worry yee not. The fact Gormless Gordon is throwing public money into the housing market is a sure sign of an impending property crash.

Come back when you're old enough to drive Timmy.

If you're giving away free money, I'll have some too.

On a serious note, though, asking the government to avoid meddling in the free market is like asking (too many politically incorrect similes come to mind)...

If first time buyers are currently priced out of the market, then their going on strike won't affect that market, will it?

First time buyers can't enter the market, because they can't afford to. Its not like they can refuse to join in by striking, they just can't enter the market if its really as bad as they say it is.

Plus, they can't refuse "to enter the market _again_" by virtue of being first timers : )

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah :-)

Nothing more mature to say? Obviously, your petition can't be that serious....

BTW - I've been driving for many decades now!

Been done. And successfully too. Maybe time for another....

The government isn't propping up the cost of nice new shiny cars by subsiding purchases.

They can if Gordon buys part of the house for them.

No doubt if they still refused to join in, Gordon'll have rules to coerce them into, er, I mean, make them reconsider the positive financial viability of the proposition

What was it you said earlier Tim....

Yeh very mature comment from you there Tim

Thats right Tim

You're right - they're not propping them up by subsidising purchases, they're doing it with high car taxes instead. Your point is??

How is that comment any less mature than your own comment, that the government should help reduce the prices of houses? All I did was change the asset being commented on ...

Which reduces the required tax take from elsewhere. Using taxpayers money to prop up the housing market increases the required tax take from elsewhere.

I don't want my taxes wasted propping up the housing market.

... although it *does* increase the tax-take in stamp duty, so it's not all required from elsewhere!

Also, if the govt keeps their equity in the houses for long enough (on average across all the houses involved), it's likely to return more than they put into it (ie it's just an investment, not an expenditure).

I might not want my taxes "wasted" on things that I'm not interested in / don't use -- does that mean the govt should stop spending in the areas I don't want??!

Have you heard of symbolic gestures ? Sometimes they can be quite effective in getting a message across.

Thinking laterally rather than one-dimensionally can give a clearer picture of whats really going on. Read some stuff by Edward de Bono (dont mean to sound patronising)
