Freelancer tax help

I am employed full time as a web designer and pay tax on all my earnings from this. Last month I did some extra work for a local business on a freelance basis for which I have just been paid and I'm looking for advice on what I need to do to keep everything above board.

I was looking on the HMRC site, but what I could find relating to income tax for the self employed seems to be geared towards people whose self employed income is there only income, where as for me it is only a very small percentage (I have earned only 500 so far and whilst there is the opportunity of further freelance work, I will be surprised if I earn more than about 2000 over the next 12 months from working this way).

I've tried to call my local office on several ocassions for some advice, but I'm greeted with a message telling me their advisors are busy and to call back later. Could anyone please give me some advice on what I need to do. Surely it can't be that complicated? :)

Thanks

Enter the total amount earned on your next tax return.

So do I just apply to be sent a tax return? All tax from my job is done PAYE, so I've never had to do anything like this before.

You have to tell HMRC that you've started self-employment within

3 months of starting; they'll then send you a tax return automatically.

There's no need to register as self employed just for a one-off bit of casual work if you're already in full time PAYE employment (unless you're going to make a regular thing of it - like taking on numerous additional design projects). Just fill in the amount you earned in the 'any other earned income' box on your 07/08 tax return and that should be fine.

It sounds like you haven't been sent a tax form to fill in in the past - many people aren't unless they request one. This would be a good year to start - I think you can order one from the HMRC website.

Overall, don't sweat it. It's no big deal - just so long as you let them know one way or another.
